Resident Evil: 10 Reasons It's The Best Horror Franchise Of All Time

7. Moments Of Peace

As a child, the idea of monsters that just don't stop coming for you just doesn't quite register.

"I could run away faster than them." you think, not taking into account the need for sleep or food or any other need to stop while they keep up their slow advance. It's only later that you realize this creeping death presents a certainty. The 'when', not 'if' of your doom. Resident Evil knows this, and it knows the best way to scare you with it isn't by throwing hordes of monsters in your face non-stop.

Even the action-focused games in the series have these wonderful moments of quiet, where you're not seeing any creatures at all and have just enough time to start worrying about where the next lot are coming from.

The shadow of a small statue on a wall becomes the next threat that you carefully approach, the tink of something hitting the glass as you walk making you jump. These are the small scares that these moments of peace make so unsettling and memorable.

And, when the dogs inevitably jump through that window, it's all the more panic-inducing when you've finally begun to relax in what seems like relative safety.
