Shinji Mikami acting as director of Resident Evil 4 doesn't sound that surprising considering it's the series he's most associated with. However, a deeper dive is where things get interesting.

The so-called Godfather of Survival Horror might've directed the original Resident Evil and it's 2002 remake but beyond that he's only ever acted as a producer. This is true for many franchises he's kicked off like Dino Crisis and The Evil Within. Mikami has never directed a sequel... with the exception of Resident Evil 4.

Capcom's original choice of director for the game was Hideki Kamiya, who had directed RE2, but his take on RE was too action-heavy and of course became Devil May Cry. Thus, after years of trialing various versions, Mikami got in the director chair for the only sequel of his career.
