6. Silent Hill - The Cat In The Locker Room

It may have proved to be "just a cat", but effects of this feline's appearance in a game like Silent Hill can be devastating for players. Jumping out of a locker as the player inspects its door, this is the kind of moment that makes you seriously glad you're not playing the game in first-person perspective.

Moving the events of a horror game into something like a locker room, where any of a hundred doors could contain something terrifying, is a grim trick. Sending the cat screeching out of one of them was a nasty move, and one that few players will forget from their first Silent Hill experience.

The locker room also features another, similar moment with the sudden appearance of a bloodied body, but the fact that a live creature like the cat pops out of this one makes it way worse.
