Skyrim: Dragonborn: 5 Reasons It's Awesome, 5 Reasons It Sucks

5 Reasons It Sucks

5. No Graphical Advancement

Though it perhaps isn't all that fair to criticise Bethesda of this given that they're bound somewhat by using Skyrim's Creation Engine, but one can't entirely excuse it either; Skyrim looked gorgeous when it was released in November of 2011, but even just 15 months later, its vistas look rather dated. Using the same visual schematic for Dragonborn, the game doesn't really attempt anything that's particularly visually ambitious; the dragon riding (which I'll get to in a moment) had plenty of potential to provide us with some truly awe-inspiring sights, but the implementation of that mode in particular denies the player this. While I wouldn't want Bethesda to stop making Skyrim expansions simply because it's starting to look dated, it is a shame that more time isn't spent refining the visuals, even if it means releasing a texture pack alongside the expansion to in effect "patch" the original Skyrim install. Granted, that's a lot of work for Bethesda, but that's not exactly something they're averse to, is it now? If the modding community can make their own patches to enhance the graphics, then surely a multi-million dollar company can.
