Star Wars Battlefront: 10 Burning Questions EA Need To Answer

3. Why Bring Back Splitscreen?

The short answer to this is obviously just "because they just have, ok? Jesus it's 2015 now mate, developers can use whatever technical devices they like to maximise your experience; retro or otherwise, yeah? Your internet connection is rubbish anyway so you're better off playing with your real friends instead of some 12 years olds in Pennsylvania". Valid points, all of them, but this is Star Wars. Nowhere in the films were the grand and defining skirmishes decided by one or two measly ground troops. The sheer scale of the conflicts on Hoth and Yavin means that for a game to succeed there has to be a sizeable depth to the amount of players in involved. Scurrying round in a 1vs1 will be dreadful, and even fighting off hordes of AI together will be pretty un-immersive if your field of vision is limited to half the screen. Worse still, what if the game decides to let you take your splitscreen mode online? It's going to take some serious broadband connections to make a game of 40 people work, never mind if they're all coming into it through only 20 connections.
