The Game Awards 2016: Who Deserves To Win Each Category
10. Best Action Game - Titanfall 2
Nominations:
Battlefield 1
DOOM
Gears of War 4
Overwatch
Titanfall 2
Now this, this is a hard category. After a lot of deliberation - and even taking into account DOOM's exemplary combat - I had to go with Titanfall 2, simply because of two things: 1. The game's campaign contains two of the most innovative and genuinely impressive levels in FPS history (yes, really) and 2. When you're in the moment, there's nothing anywhere near as satisfying as its multiplayer.
That said, its multiplayer revolves around too few gameplay modes to help Respawn net this year's 'Best Multiplayer' award (that's still to come), but as Titanfall 2 still has one of the best game engines of the year, you need only play it for a few moments to get a handle on why it's the future of the FPS genre.
Throwing out a grappling hook to any part of the level and whipping around skyscrapers, Spider Man-style, hopping aboard enemy Titan mechs and ripping out their power cores, snapping necks as you get the drop an opponent - the pure, beat for beat gameplay of Titanfall 2 is just leagues ahead of the competition this year, in almost every respect.
