Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Despite the similarities to a straight-up action category, if we start talking about the escapist connotations that accompany the word 'adventure', there's nothing that better embodies the phrase than Uncharted.

Nathan Drake's final outing sees Naughty Dog testing its coders to design their most impressive levels yet - the arguable peak being a physics-based car chase where at any time, you could be dangling out the back of a convoy on a single rope, leaping between moving vehicles or even riding one yourself.

Dishonored 2 and Hitman's world designs are exemplary, Hyper Light Drifter might be this year's most stylish game alongside Furi (where was that game's nomination?) and Ratchet & Clank is the best third-person platformer in years, but if you think of the words 'action' and 'adventure', in gaming, Uncharted is the perfect fit.
