The Last Of Us 2: 10 Believable Plot Theories You Need To Know
5. It's All Set In The Same Timeline
From the moment fans witnessed the muscular woman and her brutal run-in with the vicious cult, they clamoured over the possibility that she could be Ellie’s mother, Anna, featured as part of a flashback.
While this would be the only logical way to feature Ellie’s mother since she supposedly died after childbirth, considering the information provided, multiple timelines seem less likely.
Since the Seraphites feature in the clip, a flashback would mean the cult have been around since the earlier days of the apocalypse, leaving disembowelled bodies hanging from lampposts for quite some time.
Although a possibility, considering that the prolific Fireflies were fading come the start of the previous game, it appears less believable that this band of gut-slicing lunatics would last for nearly two decades.
Co-game directors Kurt Margenau and Anthony Newman confirmed that it is the cult featured in both the PGW trailer and the gameplay reveal, therefore the singular timeline appears more likely.
Bearing in mind that this is touted as a story about Joel and Ellie, it is difficult to imagine a flashback storyline – taking place before either met, and prior to Ellie’s birth – that would have any meaningful impact nearly twenty years later.
Therefore, the trailer of the hammer-wielding woman likely takes place in their present of 2039.
