The Last Of Us Part 2: Ranking Every Character From Worst To Best

6. Tommy

The Last of Us 2
Naughty Dog

Tommy spends most of the game off screen, being pursued by Ellie and Dina alongside their quest for revenge on the WLF, but when he's there, he's a different man than the peaceful leader from the first game. Tommy is one of the best characters from the original, living proof that people can be different in this apocalyptic world, that love and community can take priority over bloodlust and destruction.

Here, Tommy is haunted by the death of his brother, and over the course of the game, becomes more like Joel as he fights his way through Seattle.

Tommy cares about his family, the man who helped Jackson to survive and thrive as a peaceful vision of the future is still there, but he has been blackened by the thirst for revenge. He leaves his wife without communication to pursue his goals, and even after being permanently injured in Seattle, still harasses Ellie to finish the job that he can't.

His failure to avenge his brother has destroyed him, wrecked his marriage and his body, and like with Ellie, it's still all that consumes him. He has a good life, just like Ellie, and like with her, he'll burn those roots to the ground for empty satisfaction from violence that will never come. Tommy's arc is one of the most successful in the game and his performance by Jeffrey Pierce is utterly fantastic.
