The One Feature All Spider-Man Games Get WRONG
Spider-Man Is A Xenomorph
Not factoring these animations into the flow of gameplay stings doubly because some other releases do wall crawling better than Spider-Man games have done wall crawling.
Look, 2010's Aliens vs. Predator is not an amazing game. It's far worse than the best Spidey releases. And yet, it absolutely nails being able to cling onto any surface while stalking prey from below. Going from wall to ceiling is pretty seamless, and the sense of speed and fluidity isn't hampered by a dodgy camera. Sure, it's not perfect and there are issues, but nothing that couldn't be ironed out ten years on with the budget of a Sony console exclusive.
I'm not using this comparison to say that all wall crawling sequences should be first-person and have Spider-Man cracking open the heads of enemies with a second mouth (though I think I've just had an amazing idea for a Man Spider video game), just that it's a bad look if Aliens vs. Predator is beating the hero at his own game. Also, there's no shame in cribbing what works, no matter how unlikely the inspiration may be.
Also, there's another game that perfectly highlights how the current systems are failing to live up their potential...
