Rathian is another optional monster, but also serves as a tutorial for how to fight the mascot monster: Rathalos. This smaller dragon is no small fry though. She is packing heat with her fireballs and her tail can inflict a deadly dose of poison.
Thankfully, this tail can be chopped off, neutering the risk of dying to poison. Fireblight on the other hand is a real threat that looms over hunters at all times. She also loves to pick fights with other large monsters, so it's best to stay out of the way.
The fact that Rathian actually looks like a dragon is why newer players may gravitate to fighting her.
