Will WWE 13 Save THQ?
So, I've rambled on a bit, but what it really boils down to is that WWE '13 needs to have a killer feature that differentiates itself from WWE '12. Perhaps THQ will reveal it around their usual time at Summerslam, but it needs to be something that really "wows" the WWE Games fanbase. As a lurker on the WWE Games community site, WWE '12 didn't sit well with most of the "core" over there, and they absolutely ripped the online play. But I think some of the fundamental problems were obviously Road to WrestleMania (to the left of the vending machine, anyone?) and a lack of replayability. So what can THQ do to save face on these two shortcomings? Something I mentioned on previous sites is some kind of "WWE Moments" online option that allows players to play out specific moments from that weeks Raw/Smackdown, in the same vein of Madden Moments. Not only will this keep people playing, but it will also keep people connected and allow players to challenge their friends' scores/times. Additionally, and I know people have been championing this for quite some time, but a non-linear storyline would certainly keep people coming back for more. Sure, Universe mode accomplishes this, but I'd give up voice-overs and cinematics any day of the week to be able to go through the storyline with any superstar ala Here Comes the Pain and Shut Your Mouth. And if there was some way to replicate Skyrim's ability to create new quests/matches out of thin air, I wouldn't be one to complain. And sure, I'd love to have a free-roam backstage area, and CAWS.ws would gladly fill in the blanks on all of the create-a hijinks they'd like to see in the game, but in the end, WWE '13 needs to be a killer game with some kind of "never before seen" innovative feature. I'll hold my judgements until I get hands-on time with the game come October, and I have confidence that the likes of Cory Ledesma can capture what the WWE Games community really wants this year. WWE '13, if given the right amount of features, has an opportunity to really bolster THQ before the license is inevitably sold a few years from now. But THQ's stock is sitting at .54 cents as of this writing and with the reverse-stock split, things are only going to get better for THQ. Darksiders 2 is coming down the pipeline, in addition to Metro: Last Light. And while these are known franchises, most forecasters wouldn't anticipate them selling that many units. South Park: Stick of Truth looks like quite the romp, and Company of Heroes 2 will certainly feed the need of RTS fans looking for something new. But with these titles, combined with the inevitable WWE '13 retail success be enough to convince investors to buy shares in THQ? Midway through the year, it's hard to make a claim as such.
