Xbox One X: 10 Critical Reactions You Need To Know

5. Supersampling Is Great For HDTV Owners

"If you’re a 1080p TV owner, the Xbox One X will do something called supersampling to create better-looking images...The game renders itself in 4K thinking it’s connected to a 4K screen, which means objects are rendered with four times the detail. All this data can’t be displayed because, at the end it’s still being shown on a 1080p TV with a set number of pixels on its display, but the resulting image is one that is more detail-rich...Once you see a game running in 1080p with supersampling it’s very obvious that it looks better than a game running in standard 1080p." - Techradar
"1080p TVs will see benefits to pure performance. I played Destiny 2 on the Xbox One X and it felt a lot smoother than on my Xbox One S. It’s still locked to 30fps, but some of the frame rate dips I’d experienced during Destiny’s raid or public events were gone. Some games without One X-specific updates, like Destiny 2 at this point, will still see performance improvements and better texture filtering on the One X." - The Verge
"We can confirm that of the limited X-enhanced 4K titles we played, they did indeed super-sample down to 1080p, offering exceptional anti-aliasing. It's a boon for sure, but running the X-enhanced Gears of War 4 on a 4K HDR display, the improvement to the experience is simply phenomenal. That's what the machine was built for, and that's where it shines. Clearly, there are benefits running Xbox One X on a full HD screen, but to be frank, it's nothing like the full-fat experience." - Eurogamer

Though the prospect of buying something as expensive as a One X to only play it on an HDTV seems absolutely loony, the results are nevertheless solidly impressive.

Due to the console's impressive supersampling technique, even those playing in 1080p will notice a decent visual upgrade, with textures being crisper and frame-rates of course running smoother.

Simply, if you've bought a One X but are still waiting for your 4K TV to be delivered in a few days, you'll still feel the console's benefits in the mean time.
