That's the word on the street, at least. According to a tip-off obtained by Thurrott, whatever Microsoft's toiling away on behind closed doors is codenamed "Scarlett", and, according to rumours, the name encompasses much more than just a single device.

In fact, Scarlett pertains to "a family of devices", meaning there could be much more than a single shiny new black box vying for your cash in 2020.

Microsoft has manufactured and released three different versions of the One since its initial launch and it's looking likely that history will repeat itself, perhaps with all versions being available on or near to the same date with varying price points and appeal.

Even if that's not the case, Spencer's choice words at E3 have unquestionably confirmed that multiple devices are in the works. Whether they're all just variations of the same core device or wildly different remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure, "consoles" throws out any speculation that he could have been referring to a complementary device à la Kinect.

Let's leave that sort of experimental tech to history, shall we?
