5. A Darker Entry Is On The Cards
BOTW 2's development cycle echoes that of Majora’s Mask so far, which built upon Ocarina of Time’s game engine to create a brand new story with a darker twist.
Series producer Eiji Aonuma dismissed any further link in June 2019 to IGN, only confirming development parallels by stating "The new Breath of the Wild or the sequel to it, it's not necessarily going to be related to Majora's mask or inspired by it”, but also confirming that “What we showed you currently is a little darker". - Link
The trailer confirms this approach, presenting a creepier tone that would feel at place in a horror film, with Ganondorf’s malice surrounded corpse and eerie music to accompany it.
It resembles the Twilight Princess soundtrack, a comparison further backed by the mysterious arm. Covered in the golden symbols that resemble those of the Twili, a race trapped within the Twilight Realm.
Whether there is a deeper connection between the games remains to be seen. But first impressions are as important as ever when showing off a new game and if this is anything to go by, we’re in for a darker time with BOTW 2.
