10 Amazing Horror Movie Performances That Should've Won Oscars

9. Jeff Goldblum - The Fly

David Cronenberg's The Fly is elevated from merely being a great body horror film into a genuinely tragic exploration of bodily decay thanks largely to Jeff Goldblum's searing performance as doomed scientist Seth Brundle.

Goldblum takes an undeniably absurd premise, of a man slowly transforming into a grotesque human-fly hybrid, and wrings every possible drop of pathos out of it. He concedes Brundle's ultimately fatal ambition, but best shines as the transformation takes revolting hold.

On one hand, the actor gives a tremendous physical performance that compliments rather than competes with the Oscar-winning makeup work, and delivers a devastating portrayal of someone forced to accept their own impending demise.

Though the Academy's tendency to snub horror performances is oft-discussed today, even back in 1986 many prominent pundits felt that Goldblum gave an Oscar-worthy performance, yet he predictably failed to receive a nomination. Almost four decades later, it remains the actor's finest work to date, and stands as one of the Academy's all-time most egregious horror snubs.
