10 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected

7. The Menu

The moment that culinary-themed horror The Menu was announced, many came to assume it would ultimately be revealed that the villainous Chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) was actually leading a cult of cannibals who like to chow down on their diners.

The mysterious trailers hardly dissuaded audiences from this notion, and so many were surprised to sit down and watch the film for themselves, only for there to be no people-eating whatsoever. Boo.

Instead, The Menu is a black comedy about a master chef who has been driven murderously insane after losing his love for cooking, and decides to kill a room full of diners who he believes have contributed to this.

While the cannibalism theme absolutely could've worked, it's also a pretty obvious and basic route for a film like this to go, and so deciding to instead focus on the hollow pretentiousness of "fine dining" as its satirical target was a refreshingly fun and unique hook.
