10 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected
8. Under the Skin
When you hear that Scarlett Johansson is starring in a horror movie as a sexy alien who uses said sex appeal to feed on unsuspecting men, it's tough not to liken it to the gloriously schlocky 1995 sci-fi horror film Species. And even knowing that a filmmaker as talented as Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) isn't just going to serve up listless genre slop, few could've expected quite what he would give to audiences in Under the Skin.
However, Under the Skin is fundamentally about Scar-Jo's unnamed alien taking the guise of a beautiful woman and feasting on men around Scotland, but it's really about the strangeness of human existence from the outside perspective of an extraterrestrial.
Far from a loud, action-packed Genre Film, this is an often quiet and contemplative piece where many of the most memorable moments involve the alien experiencing basic human rituals for the first time.
So, it's not terribly surprising that audience scores for the film have remained polarising ever since release, as anyone expecting a down-the-line sci-fi horror romp was probably quite baffled by the more introspective, ruminative movie they actually got.
