10 More Awful Horror Movies With Incredible Special Effects

6. Everton's Final Form - Virus

John Bruno didn't have much luck directing his first (and only) full-length feature, Virus. The sci-fi thriller, which revolves around an alien intelligence turning sailors into mechanised slaves, is as predictable as horror schlock gets. Roger Ebert regarded Virus as one of the worst movies of the year, and the film's lead star, Jamie Lee Curtis, called it "an all time piece of s**t."

But since Bruno was in charge of the visuals for The Abyss, Titanic, and Avatar, it's no surprise the special effects are out of this world. Even though the production value on the Borg-like extra-terrestrials is top-notch, they are taken to another level during the third act.

After the ship's captain, Everton (Donald Sutherland) joins the aliens, he's transformed into a cybernetic monstrosity, composed of metal, wires, and necrotic flesh.

Not only does Bruno know how to craft a great monster, he knows how to shoot it. By using lighting strategically and filming Everton from specific angles, the creature looks ten times more menacing.

Although some shots have Sutherland replaced with an animatronic, it's barely noticeable, thanks to the seamless editing.
