1967's Wait Until Dark may be more of a psychological thriller than a fully-fledged horror movie, but it's still plenty terrifying. With a climax acclaimed as one of the scariest scenes in cinematic history, and taking the fact that it's cinema icon Audrey Hepburn doing the ass-kicking into account, Terence Young's nail-biting offering is a worthy inclusion for this list.

Hepburn plays Susy Hendrix, a blind woman who is terrorised by a trio of thugs searching for a heroin-stuffed doll that they believe to be in her possession. The criminals are led by Alan Arkin's Roat, initially using Susy's blindness against her by posing as different individuals to win her trust. However, once their ruse is exposed, Roat simply isn't ready for Hendrix's visceral levels of opposition.

After Arkin's villain kills his cronies and threatens to burn her property down, Susy uses her condition to her advantage by plunging her apartment into darkness. Roat's attempts to use matchlight to pierce the gloom are swiftly foiled when Hendrix douses him in gasoline. She also smashes all of the house's lightbulbs to prevent him from being able to see. Even when he eventually captures her by using the fridge's internal light, Susy is ultimately able to unplug the device.

Using the pitch black to help dispatch her foe, it's Roat lying dead on the floor when the dust finally settles. You picked the wrong house, buddy.
