10 Most Disappointing Villains From Recent Horror Movies
8. Mirror Demon - The Conjuring: Last Rites
The Conjuring films have given us some of the most iconic and truly terrifying horror villains. You will never see the top of a wardrobe in the same way again thanks to Bathsheba Sherman, and you'll think twice about looking at a portrait painting of a nun because of Valak.
Both are clearly S-tier, so it would take someone or something sinisterly special to join those demonic delights. In terms of an incredibly powerful entity of pure evil, the Mirror Demon from 2025's The Conjuring: Last Rites is at least a close second to Valak.
This is shockingly demonstrated when the Mirror Demon malevolently manipulates Father Gordon's (Steve Coulter) reality when he seeks further assistance from the church to help the troubled Smurl family.
Whilst waiting to see Bishop McKenna, we see a vacuum cable forebodingly move across the floor in the adjacent hallway. Father Gordon then notices the secretary has suddenly disappeared and picks up a ringing telephone, with the voice on the other end telling him: "You can go now". He sees a doorknob engraved with a crucifix slowly turned upside down. Thereafter, the closed doors violently burst open, leaving the entire room completely enveloped in disheartening darkness. The Mirror Demon growls at Father Gordon and sets alight his wooden crucifix, before the kindly priest proceeds to hang himself with the cable. To think, all within the confines of the most sacred and seemingly safest of places.
Apart from that standout scene, Last Rites plays rather safe. Yes, we get the standard jump scares with the Old Crone Ghost (Gabrielle Downey) and obligatory chilling chases with the ferocious axeman Abner (Leigh Jones), but given the Mirror Demon's extraordinary reality-bending powers, the filmmakers could - and should - have gone full-on Mirror Dimension, with a film of torturous trippiness. Still, you'll think twice about purchasing a massive antique mirror.
