I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), from director Jim Gillespie, introduced us to Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Barry Cox (Ryan Phillippe), and Ray Bronson (Freddy Prinze Jr.).

Beauty queen Helen and hothead Barry were, amongst others, brutally fish-hooked to death by Ben Willis (Muse Watson). Julie briefly suspected that Ray was responsible for the savage Southport murders, but he ends up saving her, and it seems as though they go off to live happily ever after having survived another round of fishhook massacres in 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

Alas, no.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025), written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, introduces us to Danica Richards (Madelyne Cline), Ava Brucks (Chase Sui Wonders), Milo Griffin (Jonah Hauer-King), Teddy Spencer (Tyriq Withers), and Stevie Ward (Sarah Pidgeon) - with Julie and Ray also returning, but now divorced.

The film is essentially a carbon copy of the original. This time, Teddy and Milo, amongst others, are the unfortunate victims of the hook-wielding killer. The person underneath the hat and slicker? Stevie. Her motivation was revenge against the group for causing the accident a year earlier that led to the death of her close friend, Sam Cooper, whom she formed a close bond with in rehab. Fortunately, it looks as though Ray has, once again, saved the day by seemingly shooting Stevie dead. Hooray!

Nope.

In an about-turn that Daenerys Targaryen would be proud of, we discover that Ray assisted Stevie's bloody revenge spree. With his unresolved trauma from 1997, Ray wasn't a fan of the gentrification of Southport, believing it was erasing the town's ruinous past reputation.

Urgh. Changing a likeable character for cheap shock value leaves a fishy stench in the air.

So, it turns out Julie was right about Ray all along... eventually.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
