On one hand, you can argue it's basically a miracle that the recent reboot of Troma's trash classic The Toxic Avenger actually got a theatrical release at all, given that it spent almost two years festering in limbo seeking a distributor following its premiere at Fantastic Fest 2023.

Despite reports that no studio in Hollywood wanted to touch the film, some even deeming it "unreleasable," The Toxic Avenger was finally released back in August with some help from Terrifier 3 distributor Cineverse. Yet even with the film getting a wide theatrical release and marketing focusing on the presence of star Peter Dinklage, the movie ended its run with just $3.3 million worldwide. Though its budget hasn't been publicised, there's no way that makes for a sound return-on-investment.

Sure, The Toxic Avenger is an ultra-niche property, and its peculiar mix of goofy and gory won't be for everyone, but even so, it's a damn shame that Cineverse couldn't repeat just a fraction of Terrifier 3's success here.

Considering how much reverence this remake had for the original, it deserved to do so much better.
