15 Seemingly Terrible Horror Castings That Totally Paid Off

1. Frankenstein (2025) - Jacob Elordi

Frankenstein's Creature
Netflix

And finally, Jacob Elordi came off as a terrible choice to play Frankenstein's Monster in Guillermo Del Toro's long-gestating passion project. He replaced Andrew Garfield (who himself wasn't a very good pick} and it was weird to imagine such a young and handsome heart-throb actor playing the grotesque, haunted role of the Monster. Elordi is noted for his height, but nothing else about him seemed suited for the part.

Sometimes, it is so great to be wrong.

Elordi was absolutely outstanding. Spending hours in the make-up chair and training in the Japanese dance-art of Butoh and the art of Mongolian throat-singing in order to develop the Creature's physicality and voice, Elordi immersed himself completely in the part and the results were spectacular. Elordi is everything the part needed: he's monstrous, he's heart-breaking and he intelligently develops the Monster through his performance, with his voice and movements evolving as the Creature slowly matures.

Elordi got an entirely-deserved Oscar nomination for his tremendous efforts and, based on his extraordinary work and his whole-hearted devotion to his craft he is - much like Sydney Sweeney, his Euphoria co-star - clearly an actor you underestimate at your peril. He could end up holding one of those gold statues one day.
