20 Best Christmas Horror Movies You NEED To Watch
10. Night of the Comet
Night of the Comet is a 1984 sci-fi comedy-horror in which a comet has wiped out most of life on Earth mere days before Christmas, leaving two Valley Girl sisters to fend off both the zombies left behind and a group of mad scientists.
Now, it's worth saying upfront that Night of the Comet eschews many of the typical Christmas hallmarks; being set in southern California for one, there's no snow to be seen at all. But the film functions as a pointed satire of the consumerist excess of the 1980s, which itself, of course, feels universally relevant to the Christmas setting.
Yet a Message Movie this ain't. It's a wild, witty B-movie pastiche topped by two outstanding, charming performances from Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney. Better yet, Maroney's character, Sam, has a wider pop-culture importance, given that she directly influenced Joss Whedon while conceiving Buffy Summers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
A remake was announced way back in 2018, though it remains to be seen if it will ever actually come to fruition.
