20 Horror Films Where Humans Are The Real Monsters
18. M3GAN 2.0 (2025)
After the success of AI killer doll movie M3GAN, director Gerard Johnstone knew he had to pull something fresh for the sequel. And he did so knowing that monsters come in all shapes and sizes – sometimes rogue tween robots, and sometimes the people who control them.
M3GAN 2.0 combines the sci-fi horror of the first film with action and a healthy dose of humour, bringing the revitalised M3GAN (Amie Donald/Jenna Davis) tentatively onto the side of her creator, Gemma (Allison Williams), to fend off new android doll threat AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno). Unlike the previous film, which saw the seemingly sweet and precious M3GAN doll turn bloodthirsty and deadly of her own accord, 2.0 tips the scales towards the real root of all evil: people.
This time around, the killer doll is merely a puppet, under the control of cybersecurity expert and anti-AI activist Christian (Aristotle Athari), who will apparently stop at nothing to meet his own ends. He infiltrates Gemma and her niece Cady’s (Violet McGraw) life, ingratiates himself, and all the while secretly tears those very lives apart using AMELIA. Why? To stoke fear of AI and have governments regulate against it.
And when we say he will stop at nothing, we mean it: implanting a neural control device in Gemma to enslave her to his will, anyone? Oh, and he very nearly causes human extinction in the process, when a now genuinely autonomous AMELIA is accidentally unleashed.
