In Splinter, young couple Seth and Polly are kidnapped by escaped convict and murderer Dennis and his junkie girlfriend Lacey. Just when it looks like things couldn't get worse, they're attacked by quill-spewing ghouls while hiding out in a petrol station.

Straight off the bat, Dennis establishes that he doesn't care about his hostages and that he's only using them for leverage. When the porcupine-like zombies show up, he becomes more unhinged, especially after Lacey dies. But when he recognises he can't beat the Infected alone, Dennis hesitantly makes peace with Seth and Polly.

Then something shifts. After the couple stop Dennis from getting infected, he treats them like friends rather than bargaining chips. When Seth is cornered, Dennis draws the Infected away, resulting in him being mortally wounded. Basically, Dennis sacrifices himself for a man he was willing to murder only a few hours ago.

But Dennis isn't done with his atonement. Before dying, he gives Polly a key to a bank account, asking her to give the money to the wife of the man he killed.

Dennis starts out rotten to the core, but did everything in his power to absolve himself.
