20 Horror Movie Endings Way Worse Than You Think

12. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) just barely makes it to the end of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in one piece, but that departing final glimpse of her cackling maniacally in the back of a pickup truck as she's driven away from Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen) really says it all.

This is a person who witnessed the grisly murder of her brother Franklin (Paul A. Partain) and then had to endure something arguably even worse - the Sawyer family's skin-crawlingly gross cannibal dinner.

Can life really get any worse than a desiccated old dude sucking on your finger for sustenance? We think not.

And so, we're left with a person whose remaining years are almost certainly going to be haunted by this experience, and in case you had any doubt, 2022's legacy sequel effectively confirms it.

50 years later Sally, now played by Olwen Fouéré, may be a battle-hardened Texas Ranger, but she's also clearly been carrying her encounter with Leatherface with her this entire time, and it's ultimately her undoing as her obsession with revenge is basically what gets her killed by him.

Granted, there's a large swath of fans quite content to just pretend the 2022 film never happened.
