20 Horror Movie Scenes That Make Absolutely No Sense

2. The Village - One Of The Worst Movie Plot Twists Ever

Final Destination 3 Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Buena Vista Pictures

Plot: In a 19th century Pennsylvania village haunted by monsters, a young woman (Bryce Dallas Howard) ventures out into the woods to get medicine for her lover.

M. Night Shyamalan is famous for his plot twists, and with this one, he completely lost the plot.

The Village's big twist is absolutely crazy, but not in a good way. It turns out that it's actually set in the present day, with the village having been founded as a way to escape from the miseries of the modern world. The 'monsters' are just the elders trying to keep everyone within the borders.

This was a fascinating idea, which is why it's too bad that, in the finished film, it ended up being such a complete load of bulls**t. There is no way that the sounds of the modern world wouldn't have reached the village, as they weren't even that far from a road, and there's no way a plane didn't pass overhead or that someone wouldn't have gone inside.

Fine, there are some vague explanations that the village founder paid a lot of money to create a wildlife nature reserve and keep it as a no-fly zone, but this scenario is impossible. No-fly zones don't work in this way, and wildlife reserves are taxpayer-funded, as opposed to being privately bought. There's also the way in which a ranger sees Iris (Howard) emerging from the 'reserve' and doesn't even report this or ask any questions.

Essentially, this is a twist so nonsensical it's actually hilarious.
