Found footage mockumentary Hunting Matthew Nichols was finally released in North America this past April after spending 18 months building buzz on the genre festival circuit.
Though the self-distributed film received positive reviews while grossing more than $700,000 worldwide against its mere $275,000 budget, the story absolutely seemed like a one-off parody of Netflix-styled true crime documentary fare. However, June saw director Markian Tarasiuk announce that a follow-up was indeed in the works, though no further details are available - namely, whether it's a direct continuation of the first film or a standalone follow-up with a new cast.
Considering that Tarasiuk's self-distribution model likely allowed him to retain the lion's share of the film's profits, and his movie received praise from none other than Steven Soderbergh himself, it's at least easy to appreciate why he's pursuing a sequel, even if few of us saw it coming.
