13. It's LITERALLY Too Dark - Wolf Man

Wolf Man isn't just a dark film in terms of its subject matter, it's also quite literally dark-as-hell aesthetically, and not in a way that enhances the viewing experience at all.

Director Leigh Whannell opted to give the film a muted, downcast visual style, as is rather trendy these days, yet the colour grade is so dim that countless scenes are a genuine struggle to watch on even a decently calibrated screen in a nice cinema.

This is especially true in the picture's third act, as for much of the climax it's tougher than it should be to parse what's actually going on, the image reduced to little more than dark sludge. Presumably, anyone trying to watch Wolf Man on a mediocre home display is going to get even more frustrated with the approach to lighting and colour grading here.

There's creating an atmosphere, and then there's just... pissing the audience off when they can't see what's happening. It's Game of Thrones all over again.
