Even though Leigh Whannell seemed like an excellent choice on paper to direct a new low-budget take on Universal's Wolf Man - having brilliantly reinvented The Invisible Man in 2020 - the writing was on the wall leading up to release that this one was set to be a huge disappointment.

For one, the trailers were thoroughly mediocre, and after the titular creature's divisive new design was unveiled at Universal's Halloween Horror Nights event in October 2024, Universal suspiciously shied away from showing the Wolf Man much in the subsequent marketing at all.

Couple this with a mid-January release - rarely a good sign for horror - a late review embargo, and Universal spoiling the full Wolf Man transformation in their final trailer in a desperate attempt to boost the box office, and it wasn't remotely shocking that this one missed the mark.

Despite solid performances from Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, Wolf Man was ultimately a woefully undercooked reboot of the classic IP that simply lacked an interesting perspective or fresh take to justify its own existence.
