7. AI Slop Coyotes - Coyotes
The new Justin Long and Kate Bosworth-starring horror-comedy Coyotes would've been a perfectly watchable romp that delivered exactly what its title promised, were it not for the misguided decision to utilise blatant generative AI for the film's coyote VFX.
While using real coyotes to shoot the movie was of course totally out of the question, the use of GenAI results in the rendered animals having a plastic-y look to them that just screams "AI slop."
Beyond this, the presumed limitations of GenAI mean that shots of the animals don't last long and there's also often a lack of consistency between shots.
Traditional VFX are undeniably expensive, but if you need to resort to tawdry, ethically questionable AI tech that's scraping the Internet for data to achieve your vision, maybe it needs a rethink at a conceptual level.
Unsurprisingly the film's Letterboxd page is absolutely packed to the gills with reviews complaining about the extensive AI use throughout, detracting entirely from its merits otherwise.
