20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Save Franchises
1. The Blair Witch Project Remake
And we'll end this list on a potentially controversial choice, but perhaps the recently announced remake of The Blair Witch Project isn't such a bad thing, actually.
It's frankly fascinating that Lionsgate has struggled to exploit the Blair Witch IP following the release of the original 1999 found-footage film, with both sequels released in 2000 and 2016 failing to recapture its critical or commercial success.
But the franchise and its lore are just too potential-rich to sit on a shelf doing nothing, and so while many fans might sniff at the impending remake, it at least has some promising talent attached.
Dylan Clark, a filmmaker whose short film Portrait of God went viral on YouTube - enough that he's developing a feature adaptation with Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele - is also set to helm this new take on The Blair Witch Project.
While it will hopefully skew more towards a reimagining rather than listlessly rehashing the original, Clark's work in the low-budget realm proves him to be an inspired choice for this new version. Though this remake will surely struggle to fully replicate the success of the original, that doesn't mean it can't be a hit in its own right and restore wider interest in the Blair Witch franchise.
