20 "WTF Did I Just Watch" Horror Sequels
19. 28 Years Later & 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
In the overcrowded world of the zombie subgenre, the 28 Days Later franchise is Britain's main contribution. As such, it's rather fitting that the long-awaited third and fourth instalments were rather on the kooky side, for we Brits and our art are known for eccentricity. Alongside their trippy visuals and unique music, both films are unexpected affairs in more ways than one.
28 Years Later was, for better or for worse, nothing like what the marketing sold it as, with it being more of a slice-of-life, Ken Loach-esque road movie that happened to feature zombies. It saved its most WTF note for its ill-judged ending, where child lead Spike (Alfie Williams) encountered a group of uninfected humans dressed as Jimmy Savile. Huh?
The Bone Temple - an excellent sequel in which that Savile cult turned out to be terrifying villains after all - dials it all up further.
Those people dressed as one of the evilest and most reviled British celebrities ever carry out stomach-churning acts of violence, one of the zombies actually gets cured of the Rage Virus in a surprise twist, and most memorably of all, supporting lead Dr. Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) impersonates the Devil and performs a crazy dance to the tune of Iron Maiden. This is then followed by a gloriously effed-up final showdown with the Savile Cult.
Neither movie is exactly what anyone expected, and in the arguably overdone world of zombie movies, these two were an idiosyncratic breath of fresh air.
