1 Overlooked Gem Song From Every Iron Maiden Album

15. The Prisoner - The Number Of The Beast

Even now, 40 years and 14 albums after its initial release, 'The Number of the Beast' is still one of the most acclaimed, popular, and consensus strongest albums Iron Maiden have ever put out. It's hard to call any of the tracks overlooked as all are typically recognised as being strong.

Having said that, there is one track that deserves even more recognition than it has received over the years. It's not on the same level as the album's titular track, 'Run to the Hills', or 'Hallowed be thy Name', but 'The Prisoner' is an outstanding song.

Off the back of 'Children of the Damned', the track's slower, pounding start soon evolves into the higher tempo power that has been so important to the band over the years. There is a lot going on in the song, but on an album dominated by the introduction of Bruce Dickinson to the band, this is one of his strongest efforts.

The chorus itself is almost anthemic in its delivery, different from the rest of the song but complementary in a way that almost forces the listener to join in. This track is a journey, and one that should be taken over and over again.
