10 Adult Rock Songs That No One Understood As Kids

8. Pride - U2

There are probably a lot of U2 songs where you would probably benefit from not knowing what the lyrics are about. Given how outspoken Bono can be when he's up on his soapbox, it makes sense that these aren't necessarily the most sunniest of topics to cover, with Sunday Bloody Sunday's depiction of bloodshed and the indifference to change on New Year's Day. There is some optimism though, and its name is Pride.

Then again, if you look at the lyrics for even a little bit, you'd be hardpressed to think this song was just a righteous version of a love song, and you'd be right...kind of. Though the plainspoken version of the song is "in the name of love," the entire object of this affection doesn't come from a lover but rather one of the most important figures in modern social change. This is actually a loving tribute to Martin Luther King, who's story resonated with Bono when going down to write the Unforgettable Fire.

While King is never really mentioned by name, his aura is all over the album and especially this song, even detailing the details of the day of his death. As much as some of these songs may have been about taking drugs and sexual escapades, it's nice to have one song every now and again that revolves around celebrating one of the greatest men to ever walk the Earth.
