10 Albums That End On A Cliffhanger
1. The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance
Anyone who has even come close to the emo genre in recent years has come into contact with My Chemical Romance's the Black Parade at one point or another. Being released around the same time as Green Day's classic rock opera America Idiot, MCR's effort manages to trump its companion by being a dense headtrip through the life of a man stricken with terminal cancer and given just a few weeks to live. So the ending has to be macabre and scary...right?
Things certainly seem like they're going that way on Disenchanted, as we hear the Patient droning on and on about how he will never be able to fulfill his dreams and grieving the loss of his life before he goes. Though Famous Last Words signals that this is going to be the end, the final verses talk about the Patient seeing his lover lying next to him and not being afraid to keep on living.
So the question remains...did he die or not? The message has remained ambiguous for years, but the either/or scenario seems to be that he isn't afraid to walk in the afterlife alone or that he manages to survive his cancer diagnosis and live a happy life with his lover. Either way, not many other rock operas manage to leave a landing so distinct that the actual outcome can become multiple choice.
