10 Albums That End On A Cliffhanger

2. A Farewell to Kings - Rush

If you start to expose Rush fans to their music with their prog period, you shouldn't be surprised when their head is put through a blender as a result. Though this Canadian trio has written some of the most celebrated prog music of the '70s and '80s, their epic period was not for the faint of heart, with most songs eclipsing the 10 minute mark half the time. While that left the albums themselves fairly punchy, A Farewell to Kings is one of the few Rush records that leaves you wanting more for a completely different reason.

After the slew of great tracks like Xanadu and Closer to the Heart, we get to the last grandiose statement with Cygnus, as we hear about our hero venturing into a black hole and being sucked in further and further. As much as this sounds like a cool idea for a song, it leaves the album feeling like it doesn't have a set ending, with the track fading out on a somewhat ambiguous note with a wall of guitar effects.

Being the more cerebral of prog bands, the entire section of this song ends up bleeding into the next album Hemispheres, which makes for both albums being ideal companion pieces for each other. Even though this is a masterful way to keep you guessing, you do start to try your audience's patience by splitting one song across two different albums.
