10 Albums That End On A Cliffhanger

3. To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar

There's not that many hip hop albums that are willing to be as cerebral as Kendrick Lamar was on To Pimp A Butterfly. Despite making one of the greatest concept albums of the modern age in Good Kid Maad City, this venture into jazz and soul territory takes any preconceived notions of Kendrick and flips them on their head, as he goes off on the leeches in society threatening to pull him down at every corner. Though he has one confidante along the way, it only takes you so far.

During the length of the album, we've have been hearing bits and pieces of spoken word poetry done by Kendrick, which dictates the next track every time he starts speaking. Coming up and getting further and further each time, Kendrick repeats the poem at the end before having a conversation with his idol Tupac Shakur as if he were still among the living.

As the final track Mortal Man progresses, we hear Kendrick discussing the fate of the black community in America before reciting another bit of poetry for Tupac. Once the instrumentation starts building, Kendrick asks for Shakur's perspective before being met with the cold stop of reality. By just leaving you on that one word question of "'Pac?," Kendrick spoke more volumes in his work than most other rappers could ask for in their entire career.
