10 Albums That Should Have Never Gotten Big

9. Greetings From Asbury Park - Bruce Springsteen

There's an old adage spread throughout rock history that bands have their entire lives to make their first record. Since you have nothing to compare it to, the fact that you're left to your own devices in the studio and told just to create leads to bands starting off with their best foot forward most of the time. Granted, if you have your influences worn a little too close to the chest, it can often go too far the other way too.

Though we know Bruce Springsteen as the heartland rock master these days, Greetings From Asbury Park seems to pigeonhole him into one sound before he was even sure if he liked it or not. Being more of a poetic lyricist than his contemporaries, the rambly nature of Springsteen's delivery on Blinded by the Light and Growin Up made audiences compare him to Bob Dylan immediately.

While it may have been flattering for the Boss to see himself being compared to his hero, it wasn't a title he wanted to live behind either, finally managing to break out of the confines two albums later with Born to Run. Given that other up and comers like Aerosmith were on the same roster as Springsteen at this point, it wouldn't have been the worst thing for them to get a little bit more notoriety than New Jersey's finest.
