10 Albums That Were Hated Before They Even Came Out
2. Hot Space - Queen
It gets to be really tempting the first time a band hits #1 in the charts. It's every band's dream to at least have their album sell in big numbers, but Queen managed to transcend just rock and roll on the Game, with Another One Bites the Dust turning into one of the biggest singles they've ever had. If Dust sold so well though, why not just make the entire next record nothing but that?
That's pretty much what we were subjected to on Hot Space, with most rock fans denying it on principle because of its focus on too many synthesizers. It's not like they're that off the mark either, with songs like Back Chat and Body Language sounding almost artificial in sound, with the band being more influenced by those big fat royalty checks than something that they actually thought would sell in droves. What's interesting about Hot Space though is just how disjointed it is going from one part of the album to the next.
While the first half of this album is the synth fest that no one really wanted, the back half of the album is just your standard Queen material like Life is Real and Put Out the Fire, albeit to a much lesser degree than what we got on an album like Sheer Heart Attack or A Night at the Opera. By the time you finally reach the massive single Under Pressure to close out the record, it practically feels like penance for the '80s schlock that you had to subject yourself to to get there.
