10 Albums That Were Supposed To Be Great (But Fell Apart)
1. Cyberpunk - Billy Idol
It goes without saying that the start of the '90s killed a lot of '80s stars. Once grunge swooped in and took the rock world by storm, people didn't really have time to listen to the more cartoonish rockstars that came out of the early days of MTV. Even though someone like Billy Idol seemed to be on the way out, he actually tried one sonic shift with Cyberpunk.
Coming off of a motorcycle accident, Idol got inspired to go down the sonic rabbit hole known as electronic music, with songs that would work better coming out of a C tier dance club than an actual arena of screaming fans. Whereas the opening single Shock to the System got you acquainted with the album, the amount of boring to be found on here is oddly disconcerting coming from the guy behind growls like White Wedding and Rebel Yell.
Even though the rest of the music world was getting much more serious, Idol's departure into the electronica pool went too far in the serious direction and made him look like the definition of pretentious. It also came down to bad timing, seeing how Idol could have practically been a forerunner for the industrial side of rock if he had picked the right time and place. What we got though was Cyberpunk, and when it comes to cool '90s nostalgia, this is one file that has gotten corrupted over time.
