10 Albums That Will Make You Love Emo
1. The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance
Once emo music started to sink its teeth into the rock sphere, there was still a lingering belief that the whole thing seemed to just be a fad. Just like the boy bands had done just a few years before, this was just the commercialized version of angsty rock and roll, and a lot of people thought it would just go away once the teenagers started to grow up a bit. This was a genre that was going to last though, and you don't even need to wear eyeliner everyday to understand why an album like the Black Parade hits this hard.
While My Chemical Romance were already on the rise as one of the kings of the emo genre, this is where they took a quantum leap from their peers, crafting a rock opera in the vein of their heroes like Pink Floyd and David Bowie. Centered around the story of a man slowly withering away from a cancer diagnosis, Gerard Way paints a picture through the final hours of the man's life, from the flatline sound that opens up the song Dead to finally coming to terms with no longer existing on the song Famous Last Words.
They don't skimp out on the emo flavored darkness though, with the band decked out in the goth version of the Beatles' Sgt Pepper outfits, along with songs like Sleep and Teenagers talking about the influence that true evil can have on you at the worst of times. There's still a cynical streak to everything, but it's not about keeping you in that sad space. This is looking mortality right in the face and knowing that whatever happens to you, death won't stop you from living your life while you've got it.
