10 Albums That Will Make You Love Emo
2. Pinkerton - Weezer
Weezer were never really designed to be an emo band when they started out. In the wake of bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam either falling apart or avoiding the limelight, Rivers Cuomo's different pop flavored gems gave the scene a little bit of optimism, almost like if the Beach Boys had been born a few decades too late. Fame can change a man though, and Rivers was a lot more confused once their blue debut took off.
Not really wanting the kind of attention that he initially dreamed of, the band took a break before cutting their second album, as Rivers decided to go to college at Harvard. When they came back to make what was originally intended as a sci fi concept album, Rivers came through with one of his most emotionally revealing set of songs of his career, whether that's talking about being burned out by groupie culture on Tired of Sex or falling in love with a lesbian on Pink Triangle.
While the subject matter can get more than a little bit uncomfortable on songs like El Scorcho and Across the Sea, this is probably the most authentic record that Rivers could have put out at this point. The critics may have given it a thrashing back in the day, but this wasn't meant to be the second version of the Blue Album. This is a man that has finally gotten success beyond his wildest dreams, only for it to come back and crush his emotions in the process.
