10 Albums That Will Make You Love Garage Rock Music
1. Kick Out the Jams - The MC5
Some of the greatest rock and roll comes from having something deep down inside of you that you need to let loose. From the moment Little Richard first screamed into the microphone, this was music that came from artists with rock and roll in their veins. If you think that you have the rock and roll spirit inside of you though, you haven't seen anything until you've taken a look at the MC5.
Taken from some of the greatest gigs they have ever performed, Kick Out the Jams has the unbridled fury that rock and roll was always meant to have, capturing a certain frenzy that can only come from a live performance. Outside of the actual crowd noise providing its own sense of chaos, hearing songs like Rambling Rose and the title track in this setting is the only proper way for them to be enjoyed, as Wayne Kramer takes joy in beating the hell out of his guitar until it's practically screaming for mercy.
This would be the only time that the MC5 were able to scrape this kind of power again though, with the next handful of studio releases never equaling the spark that they had here. That's not to say that they were a bad band by any stretch though. These were the kind of songs that Chuck Berry had prepared us for, and the MC5 made us believe in something bigger than just music. The early days of rock and roll may have been fun, but this is where the rock scene first started to discover its power.
