10 Albums That Will Make You Love Garage Rock Music

7. Up the Bracket - The Libertines

Going through this list so far, it's pretty clear that American rock and roll is the cornerstone of garage rock. Even though there are more than capable bands from across the pond that have made incredible music of their own, the grimy edge that rock and roll comes with always had its roots in the heart of America, through the blues and the suburban streets that blast this kind of music. As garage rock started to rear its head again though, The Libertines' debut felt like the beginning of a new punk evolution.

Because this is basically just a punk album with a garage rock ethos, as Pete Doherty goes on long tangents while trying to write a coherent song. Across every song on this album, you can feel that the wheels are about to fall off at practically any minute, and yet the songs still stay the course, just like it sounded like when hearing a band like the Sex Pistols back in the day. For all of their punk attitude though, there's also a fair bit of melody thrown into the mix as well.

If you listen to something like The Boy Looked At Johnny, you can grab onto the melody pretty quickly and be singing along by the end, even if the actual band sounds like they can barely get through it in one go. The band might have burned out way too quickly for most of us, but this feels like the closest to a perfect garage rock album, taking the tunefulness of something like the Clash and injecting some modern cynicism into the mix.
