10 Albums That You Need To Listen To More Than Once
4. Lateralus - Tool
Heavy metal by nature is a genre that isn't really going to gel with absolutely everyone. As much as the riffs of something like Black Sabbath might sound awesome at the moment, there's plenty of music fans that are willing to just write these devilish riffs off as neanderthalic music. Hell, even when metal bands proved they could be smart on Lateralus, people were still hesitant to accept it.
Granted, it's not that hard to see why something like Tool didn't really click with the mainstream audiences right away. After all, most people listening to rock radio aren't necessarily tuning in to listen to a 7 minute song with shifting time signatures happening left and right. Yes, it might be a little much for you to take in all at once, but this kind of album benefits more from the amount of time you put into it as well.
Compared to the straightforward hard rock of something like Metallica, Tool's music has the capacity to make you a better musician the more you listen to it, picking up on the shifting meters and even the cerebral head trips that are taken on in the lyrics, from the Fibonacci Sequence in the title track to the astrological musings going on in the Grudge. Even though it might not please all camps, it's rare that you see an album like this that can please both the headbangers and intellectuals in equal measure.
