10 Albums Turning 20 In 2019
5. Muse - Showbiz
Muse have had one of the more unique career trajectories in modern rock. Whether it's space rock, arena rock, or synthwave music, this power trio have always stayed true to themselves. On their debut however, Muse were still getting down who they were.
The songs show frontman Matt Bellamy's knack for writing ear-catching melodies, while his stratospheric vocal range takes songs like "Muscle Museum" and the ballad "Unintended" to unseen heights. But the influences certainly show. There is a clear Radiohead sound in the guitar work while Bellamy's voice sounds like a mix between Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley.
However,it never becomes detrimental to the music. This is the closest to a punk album that the band would ever release, with a lo-fi sound as well as a few musical left turns. "Falling Down" takes a detour into country territory with its chord progression. On the other hand, "Fillip" shows Bellamy taking on a vocal swagger reminiscent of '70s glam rock.
While those songs are certainly different, cuts like "Sober" and "Sunburn" show the Muse song structure falling into place. Muse had more ambitious plans for their work, but this album's raw sound makes it a pleasant standout in their catalog.
