10 Albums You Loved As A Teen (But Should Never Listen To Again)
4. The Slim Shady LP (Eminem)
Released: 1999.
Why You Shouldn't Listen: There was a time when Eminem could do no wrong. He was the white-boy rapper who, unlike Vanilla Ice, had credibly invaded the space occupied by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and other hip-hop superstars. What's more, songs like 'My Name Is' received a ton of airplay on TV and radio.
Therein lies the problem.
Reliving Eminem's misogynistic hot-take on life in 2019 requires resetting one's brain to 1999 when lyrics like, "I smoke a fat pound of grass and fall on my ass, faster than a fat bitch" were acceptably edgy. Today, they sound overblown, ridiculous and almost like someone is parodying rap rather than slotting neatly into the genre.
Eminem's voice also grates the longer you listen. The sheer stamina needed to last this LP's hour-long length means it's not worth the hassle. In retrospect, there's little to like about his major label debut, or his fascination with shocking rhymes.
